Maximillian Helmet
In the Metropolitan Museum in New York city there is a very large suit of armour. That suit was one of six that were
stolen by one of Napoleon's Generals in 1814. Those six suits were brought back to Paris and sold to
different arms and collectable dealers. Parts were often sold to different collectors and soon it
became difficult to make a complete suit of armour from that original collection of six.
There was quite a few good armourers in the 19th and early 20th century working to repair and
make missing parts for collectors. One well-known armour from Germany that worked in Paris was Ludwig Klien.
Herr Klien was commissioned to make a replacement helmet for the Giant Maximilian style suit
of armour in 1875, and THIS is that very helmet.
The original helmet surfaced at an Auction in England in 1922, it was part of the lot 61 at the Meyrick sale and sold for 609 pounds.
In many cases, upon their death, collectors donated their entire collection to museums; which is what happened here as well.
Two separate collectors donated both the original helmet and suit to the Metropolitan Museum in New York,
they were reunited in 1926 and have been on display ever since.
As for this Duplicate helmet, it has passed through different collectors throughout Europe and finally here in the USA.
This Unique piece of history is for sale once more.
This Maximillian style helmet is 135 years old is comprised of a one piece skull with five distinct ridges and fine fluted lines. It is of Armet style with a choke neck collar. Has hinged cheek plates that hook together at the front of the chin. A one piece visor and incorporated ventail.
This helmet was made by the famous 19th century Master armourer Ludwig Klien.
